lacimto
Lacimto is used to prevent high blood phosphate levels in patients who are on dialysis due to severe kidney disease. Dialysis removes some phosphate from your blood, but it is difficult to remove enough to keep your phosphate levels balanced. Decreasing blood phosphate levels can help keep your bones strong, prevent unsafe buildup of minerals in your body, and possibly decrease the risk of heart disease and strokes that can result from high phosphate levels. Calcium acetate is a natural mineral that works by holding onto phosphate from the diet so that it can pass out of your body.
Composition
Calcium Acetate Tablets USP 667mg
Mode of Action
Dialysis patients absorb 40% to 80% of dietary phosphorus. Therefore, the fraction of dietary phosphate absorbed from the diet needs to be reduced by using phosphate binders in most renal failure patients on maintenance dialysis. Calcium acetate when taken with meals combines with dietary phosphate to form insoluble calcium phosphate which is excreted in the feces. Maintenance of serum phosphorus below 6.0 mg/dl is generally considered as a clinically acceptable outcome of treatment with phosphate binders. Calcium acetate is highly soluble at neutral pH, making the calcium readily available for binding to phosphate in the proximal small intestine.
Indications
Calcium acetate is used to treat hyperphosphatemia (too much phosphate in the blood) in patients with kidney disease.
Dosage
1. Usual Adult Dose for Hyperphosphatemia, 2. Initial dose: 1334 mg (2 tablets/capsules), orally, with each meal, 3. Maintenance dose: 2001 to 2668 mg (3 to 4 tablets/capsules) with each meal, 4. Titrate dose every 2 to 3 weeks until an acceptable serum phosphorous level is reached.
